Designed by Henry Rasmussen, VERITAS was built three years after Barlevento as KAY for a Swedish yachtsman, Sven Frisell, by the famed Abeking and Rasmussen Yard in Germany in 1962 using corten steel for her hull, varnished mahogany for her coach house, sitka spruce for spars and finished off with a teak deck. For more than 20 years she was the flagship of the Edgartown Yacht Club (Martha’s Vineyard) before being sailed across the Atlantic where she spent time in the Med and was then sailed to the Caribbean and finally back to New England.

In 2004 VERITAS was refit under the direction of her current captain. Veritas was faired and repainted, all bright work restored, and the running and standing rigging replaced as necessary. Many new sails were made including a #1 Genoa, club footed jib, mizzen, and mizzen spinnaker. The sail maker also made a new top and enclosure for the cockpit.

On the inside she received a full paint and varnish throughout including the cabin soles. During the refit all of VERITAS’ old wiring was replaced including the main breaker panel and inverter which were replaced with a more modern 2000 watt smart inverter. The plumbing system also received a major overhaul, new pumps were installed, new hoses run, and new bilge pumps installed. The Mercedes Benz main engine was replaced with a new Volvo Penta TAMD 41-HB, with new running gear and a refinished propeller.

In 2008 VERITAS completed a smaller refit period where her generator was replaced, air conditioning added and all the spars wooded and completely refinished. In addition she has been equipped with satellite radio and weather, wifi-booster, and upgraded TV/DVD/Stereo systems including iPod adaptor.

Captain Todd Patterson was born and raised on the waters around Cape Cod and the Islands in Massachusetts. His early love of sailing led to competition with various sailing teams in New England and subsequent participation in numerous ocean races including Newport to Bermuda, and Marblehead to Halifax. During a High School race Todd saved the life of a fellow sailor who had capsized and become tangled in the rigging. For this he was awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Sportsmanship Award from US Sailing.

A graduate of Hobart College with a BA Degree, Todd has captained and crewed aboard a variety of sailing and motor yachts, from a 60 Hatteras Sport fish to a 155 ft Christensen prior to taking up his duties aboard VERITAS. In addition to his credentials as a USCG Licensed Master 100 Ton, he managed a full refit of VERITAS in 2004 and most recently managed an updating of the vessel upon his return. He has sailed tens of thousands of miles and has great respect and knowledge of the sea.

Todd’s goal is to create a vacation experience for clients that are as memorable as the sites they will see. He will discuss your itinerary preferences and ensure that all guests’ experience the best of what the British Virgin Islands have to offer.
