Norman Island, BVI
The British Virgin Islands are steeped in pirate history. Many famous names, including Blackbeard, Sir Francis Drake and Jack Hawkins, used the Virgin Islands as a staging ground for attacks on vessels laden with booty headed back to Europe.
All seafarers knew that the Virgin Islands boasted some of the most secure but unattended harbors in the West Indies. As a result, legendary pirate dens were established. One of the most notable dens was the Bight at Norman Island. Robert Louis Stevenson brought notoriety to this island and its anchorages with his novel Treasure Island where the story of Long John Silver is reputedly set.
Today, Norman Island offers one of the safest and most scenic harbors in the British Virgin Islands. No pirates to be found, but it is rumored that treasure remains hidden all over. However any treasure found does have to be given to the Captain.
